[russisch »Öffentlichkeit«, zu russisch glasnyj »öffentlich«, »der Allgemeinheit zugänglich«] die, -, im Zusammenhang mit der sowjetischen Politik der Perestroika in der zweiten Hälfte der 80er-Jahre von M. S. Gorbatschow geprägtes politisches Schlagwort, benannte als ein grundlegendes Prinzip der von ihm eingeleiteten Reformpolitik in der UdSSR die öffentliche Information und Diskussion über alle wichtigen gesellschaftlichen Belange. Insbesondere mithilfe der Medien sollte die Transparenz der Entscheidungsfindung in Partei- und Staatsorganen sowie eine breite Meinungsbildung garantiert werden. Glasnost stellte eine Abkehr von der restriktiven und selektiven Informationspolitik der KPdSU gegenüber der Bevölkerung dar und ermöglichte u. a. den Beginn einer kritischen Aufarbeitung der sowjetischen Geschichte (z. B. des Stalinismus) sowie das öffentliche Ansprechen von innergesellschaftlichem Defiziten und Konflikten (Nationalitätenfragen, wirtschaftliche Probleme, Kriminalität, Bürokratismus, Korruption).
